With the win, the Dodgers won their eighth World Series championship in franchise history, tying their longtime rivals the San Francisco Giants for the second-most among National League clubs and the fifth-most overall. rpggiftcards.com/check card/ The Dodgers also joined their 2020 team, the 2018 Red Sox, the 2016 Cubs, the 2013 Red Sox, the 2009 Yankees, the 2007 Red Sox, and the 1998 Yankees as teams to win a World Series after having the best regular-season record in MLB in the wild card era. The Dodgers also set the record for most runs to come from behind from in a clinching game. The World Series MVP Award went to Freeman, the first player to homer in the first four games of a World Series and whose 12 RBIs tied the World Series record set in 1960 by Bobby Richardson. Freeman became the 12th player to win regular season MVP and World Series MVP in a career.
Amen to that. To live up to a working week’s worth of hype is no small feat. But the Dodgers and Yankees — the No. 1 seeds in the National and American Leagues who are clashing in the Fall Classic for the first time in 43 years — played a Game 1 very much worth the wait.
“I was just screaming in his face. I’m sorry, dad,” Freeman said, laughing. “He’s been there since I was a little boy, throwing batting practice to me every day. So this is a moment, it’s my dad’s moment.”
More daunting then — beyond the October history that flatly states their chances of coming back in this Fall Clasic are slim to none — is an opponent that has lost four games in a row only twice this season: a five-game skid in late May and a four-game tumble in mid-July.

How much either bullpen will be relied on in Game 5 will depend on the rematch of the Game 1 starting pitchers: Gerrit Cole and Jack Flaherty. Cole outpitched Flaherty then, but not by much; Flaherty allowed two runs across 5 1/3 innings, while Cole allowed one run in six innings. Round 2 between the two right-handers offers very different stakes than the first edition, in which both starters were hoping to set the tone in the series, only to see Game 1 veer off-course.
The Dodgers remained in striking distance for much of Tuesday’s game, but the Yankees’ pitching staff kept them at arm’s length until New York’s offense exploded for five runs in the eighth inning, putting the kibosh on any potential late drama. The good vibes — and a modicum of confidence — had been restored at the Stadium, and the players could feel it.
How would one define the World Series? It’s Willie Mays catching what can’t be caught and Don Larsen being perfect where perfection is simply not possible. It’s Babe Ruth telling the fans and media where he is going to deposit the next pitch and a heavily outscored team of Pirates beating the unbeatable Yankees off a ninth inning Bill Mazeroski blast. The World Series is the crushing blow of Fred Snodgrass dropping a routine fly ball and Willie McCovey hitting the final out straight to Bobby Richardson. It’s the Curse of the Bambino, when loyal Red Sox fans live their entire lives without witnessing a championship and when Yankees fans witness four in five years…
While he struggled in both his NLDS start against the Padres and his most recent NLCS start against the Mets — where he gave up eight earned runs and walked four in just three innings — he also delivered a scoreless performance in Game 1 of the NLCS, tossing seven innings and allowing only two hits.
Who is hot and who is not?Dodgers: Freeman continues his dominant World Series run, hitting a homer in all four games against the Yankees. The star first baseman has now hit a homer in six consecutive games in the Fall Classic, a new record. He also has 10 RBIs in the four games. If the Dodgers wrap it up, Freeman will likely be taking home his first World Series MVP trophy.
If he’s anything like the Gerrit Cole we saw in Game 1, when he held the Dodgers to one run on four hits over six-plus innings at Dodger Stadium, then the Yankees pulse that was revived in Game 4 could quicken in Game 5.
This series marked the twelfth World Series meeting between the Dodgers and Yankees and the first since 1981. It was also the thirteenth meeting between teams from New York City and Los Angeles for a major professional sports championship. This previously happened in four World Series (1963, 1977, 1978, 1981), three NBA Finals (1970, 1972, and 1973) and the 2014 Stanley Cup Finals. Following the 2024 World Series, LA teams held a five to four advantage over New York City teams in terms of championship matchups between the two cities.
This was the first World Series to feature the teams with the best record in each league since the 2020 World Series. This was just the fifth time in the Wild Card era (1995–present) where both teams with the best record in each league faced each other in the World Series.
“We faced every adversity possible and we overcame every single one,” Freeman said, who won his second title after 2021 with Atlanta, and rebounded from a sprained ankle to homer in each of the first four Series games.
The game ended with the Yankees winning 11-4. Shohei Ohtani had only one hit, a single. Holding on to his shoulder, Ohtani sprinted to second and nearly made it when Mookie Betts hit into a fielder’s choice. A healthy Ohtani would have likely reached the base with no problem, but the Dodgers’ superstar is not in top form right now. That will remain something to watch the rest of the series, however long it lasts.
2) Is Freddie Freeman going to homer again? If the Dodgers do end up winning this series — as is still pretty likely, considering they’re up 3-1 — Freeman is obviously going to be the MVP. His two-run shot in the first inning of Game 4 marked his sixth consecutive World Series game with a home run (going back to 2021 with Atlanta), which is of course the all-time record.
Ironically, the LA Dodgers used to be a New York team known by various names and nicknames before moving to Los Angeles before the 1958 season. Among them, the Brooklyn Dodgers, Brooklyn Robins, Brooklyn Superbas, Brooklyn Grooms, Brooklyn and Brooklyn Bridegrooms.
When Buehler struck out Verdugo to end the game, the Dodgers poured onto the field to celebrate between the mound and first base, capping a season in which they led the big leagues with 98 wins. With several thousand Dodgers fans remaining in a mostly empty stadium, baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred presented the trophy on a platform quickly erected over second base.
